The Overlap Between Women’s Health and Mental Health
Women’s health and mental health are deeply interconnected. Ignoring the impact of mental health on gynaecological issues can lead to treatment-resistant conditions that may significantly affect quality of life. Conversely, gynaecological conditions and hormonal fluctuations—such as those experienced during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and menopause—can profoundly influence mental health. Symptoms like anxiety, depression, inattentiveness, and memory difficulties are often exacerbated by these physiological changes.
What We Offer
Our expert team provides evidence-based, specialized care for a wide range of reproductive psych-gynae concerns, including:
- Hormonal Changes and Mental Health
Hormonal changes during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause are natural parts of a woman’s life. However, these changes can contribute to mental health disorders such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), postpartum depression, and psychosis.
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS can have far-reaching effects on mental health. Many women with PCOS struggle with weight gain and body image issues, which can impact emotional regulation, relationships, and overall well-being. Women with PCOS are at an increased risk of developing anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and eating disorders.
Effective management of PCOS often includes weight control, which can be challenging for women with underlying mental health conditions such as eating disorders or ADHD. Emerging research suggests a link between ADHD and PCOS, highlighting that treating ADHD can help improve diet, physical activity, and overall symptoms of PCOS.
- Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a systemic condition that affects not only physical health but also mental well-being. It is associated with chronic pelvic pain, central sensitization, and psychological distress. Women with endometriosis are at a higher risk of developing mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
Recent evidence suggests genetic alterations associated with endometriosis may also influence brain health. Given these risks, mental health screenings are recommended following an endometriosis diagnosis to ensure holistic care and management.
